Alan Wu is a player at Vanderbilt and previous player at Rutgers and Holmdel High School. Despite repeated allegations by Andrew Zeng and others, Alan maintains that he is not a military history player.
He is a Chinese history specialist and is otherwise known for going on long tangents about his ancestors and opera. He additionally speaks Mandarin Chinese, French, and German.
Career
High school
Alan co-founded the quizbowl club at Holmdel High School, and served as president for all four years. The club was primarily focused on NHBB events, with Alan winning the 2021 Northern New Jersey C-Set National History Bee regional. He placed sixth in the 2021 Varsity National History Bee and eighth in the 2020 JV National History Bee.
College
Alan spent his college freshman year as part of the Rutgers quiz bowl team. He notably soloed 2022 ACF Fall at UMD , traveling nearly four hours to the site with a bizarre arrangement of four moderators and only one player, despite already meeting the minimum price cutoff with just one buzzer set and one moderator. At the 2023 ICT, he was part of Rutgers's second-place Division II team alongside Aum Mundhe and Aiden Dartley, losing to Waterloo in the second round of a disadvantaged final 380-400. He somehow had the highest power percentage of any player in the entire Division II field at 59.1% after scoring 13 powers. He is still bitter that he hasn't since been able to read a tossup ("these products") that he powered during the first round of finals.
Alan transferred to Vanderbilt in the Fall 2023 semester, but still occasionally appears in the Northeast to drag unfortunate victims in the quizbowl community to the Met Opera and overpriced dinners.
