Playing History
High School
Max joined the Fremd Scholastic Bowl team in the fall of 2006, during his sophomore year. He was a starter for the junior varsity team in the 2006-07 season and helped the team to win the Mid-Suburban League (MSL) Frosh-Soph Conference Championship in 2007. Max's most significant single contribution to the team's season came in the semifinal match of the 2007 Wheaton North Falcon Invitational, as Max's timely answer gave Fremd the final toss-up and the match. Max was also a member of the frosh-soph team that played as Fremd C in the 2007 Fremd Varsity Invitational tournament. Fremd C was the only Fremd team to advancement to the afternoon rounds of that tournament. The following fall, Max joined the Varsity team, earning a spot as a consistent starter in the 2007-08 season, often serving as B-team captain when not playing with the A team at invitational tournaments. Max, under captain Sam Stejskal and seniors Jake How and Rossen Rashkov, helped the Fremd team to win their MSL division and finish Runners-Up in the 2008 Conference Championship. This year, the Fremd team also won back its Regional Championship title. In the 2008-09 season, Max was joined by his former junior varsity teammates, and their previous successes had given them high hopes for the season. In a season marked by invitational placings, an MSL Conference title, and a Regional title, Max's State tournament ambitions were cut short by losses to Stevenson and Buffalo Grove at the Sectional tournament. Despite Max being the only senior starting player for Fremd, the team lost by only a single point to State-qualifier Stevenson. After the conclusion of the IHSA state tournament, Max helped MSL West to defeat MSL East in the Conference All-Stars match. Max returned in the 2009 to substitute coach for Fremd B at the New Trier Varsity.
College
Max joined Truman State's Academic Competition Organization in the fall of 2009; however, conflicts with the Truman State University Statesmen Marching Band's schedule deterred him from participating in any quiz bowl events until January 2010, making his collegiate debut as a member of Truman B at ACF Winter. Max and teammate Kyle Goff led Truman D in points at the NAQT Regional tournament in February 2010. Max also helped to organize, and wrote questions for, the 2010 Truman Bowl II, held at Truman State University on March 27, 2010.
