Parkersburg High School is one of two public high schools located in Parkersburg, West Virginia. It competes in Class AAA in the state tournament organized by the West Virginia Academic Coaches Association and attended the National Academic Championship in 2001 and 2005.
One of Parkesburg's feeder schools is Jackson Jr. High, whose 2007 quiz bowl team made it to the Washington, D.C., playoffs at the NAC.
As of this year, Parkersburg competed in four West Virginia tournaments in the 2008-2009 year, placing first in the latter three. Coached by Ernest Wayne Clark from the 2007-2008 year, the team now has at minimum four practices a week. Also winning the state championship for the 2008-2009 year, the team attended the National Academic Championship that same year, reaching the quarterfinals of the playoffs.
History
Parkesburg has consistently placed in the top four teams of the Class AAA state tournament for many years. The 2005 team won the Class AAA state championship and almost qualified for the PAC, but lost the overall championship to the Class AA-A champs, Charleston Catholic. The 2009 team won both the Class AAA and overall West Virginia State Championship, held at Ohio Valley University in Vienna.
Nationals
Parkersburg attended both the 2001 and 2005 NACs held in Washington, D.C. In 2001, they made it to the semifinals of DC, where they narrowly lost 335-360 to Klein due to not stating a fraction in lowest terms (which is responsible for the Parkersburg rule now found in the NAC rules). They placed 10th overall in the field of 133 teams.
In 2005, Parkersburg placed 68th of 114 teams.
