Won by Walt Whitman of Bethesda, MD in a 275-195 final over Upper Arlington of Ohio. 34 teams attended.
Whitman lost to Upper Arlington 340-335 in the only preliminary round, became the only non-winning team to advance to the single-elimination bracket as a "wild card," then defeated Upper Arlington in a finals rematch. According to Beall, this was one of only three tournament rematches from 1983 to 1998.
Independence (NC) was eliminated in a close quarterfinal game with Upper Arlington when a tossup on the definition of "forlorn" was thrown out because an audience member shouted the answer as a player was buzzing in.
