For our (theoretical, though becoming slightly more concrete every day) tournament, I was thinking that we could revive a format used most prominently by the PACE opening round and slightly less prominently by DC area high schools. That format is the RELATED TOSSUP/BONUS format (RTB for short). Basically, each tossup has a specific bonus following it that is someway, somehow, related to the tossup. The link can be: * Answer to related answers (Tossup Answer: Wordsworth; Bonus Topic: British Poets) * Answer to its work/creator (Tossup Answer: George Orwell; Bonus Topic: _Animal Farm_) * Segue (Tossup Answer: Duke; Bonus begins: "The Devils set a new record with four players in the first round of the 1999 NBA Draft. Identify these other draftees...") * Clue connection (Tossup asks for Richard III [the person] and mentions he is the subject of a Shakespeare play; Bonus Topic: Shakespeare's Histories) * Bizarre (Tossup Answer: butterfly; Bonus Topic: Muhammad Ali [the boxer], based on his motto, "Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee!") {NOTE: If you think this is bad, you should've seen what it was before I made it more reasonable!} All those with opinions one way or the other are encouraged to respond. Responding in this public forum is encouraged; also, I will accept private e-mails (not at the Duke address; at my summer email, which I'm not posting here, but which you can find out if you ask the right people). I hope there's something resembling debate on this issue, and I hope people tend to like it. NOTE: Don't bother telling me that I'll need to do extra careful writing/editing, or that I'll probably need the questions much sooner in advance, or other logistical nightmares. The PACE directorate informed me of that. --Andy Goss --Duke
