With the excitement of Capital Punishment over (how the heck was I ever an all-star???), I think I'll provide a little something to discuss. Below, I list what I think were the ten most exciting games of 1998-99. This is inspired by the poll of most exciting game ever (which I agree would still be 1997 NAQT Championship Finals, Game 3: Chicago 270, Harvard 270, Chicago wins in overtime). For the sake of everyone involved, I narrowed my ballot to games between the last two teams in contention at a non-Junior Bird, non-Trash tournament. After scouring the Tournament Archive, I came up with 40 eligible games. From them, I made a Top 10. My criteria were (a) lots of points and (b) closeness, in no particular order. After creating a formula to represent this, I got the following Top 10. Since your mileage may vary, you can choose whatever and however many matches you want. You don't even have to have seen all or any of them. It's only a matter of discussion. Anyhow, here they are: #10: Penn Bowl VIII Finals, Game 1 of 1 (Chicago 225, South Carolina 200) #9: CBI National Playoffs, Game 3 of 3 (Chicago 220, Michigan 215, Chicago wins series 2-1) #8: UTC Center of Universe Final, Game 2 of 2 (Virginia Tech 300, Kentucky 215, Virginia Tech betters Kentucky's record) #7: Illinois Salute to Mediocrity Final, Game 1 of 1 (Chicago 240, Masters Team 205) #6: NAQT Southeastern Final, Game 1 of 2 (Duke 230, Berry 215, Duke would win series 2-1) #5: ACF Midwestern Final, Game 2 of 3 (Chicago 235, Illinois 230, Chicago wins series 2-0) #4: NAQT Southern Final, Game 1 of 3 (Texas 275, Arkansas 240, Texas would win series 2-1) #3: Qunicy University ACK Final, Game 1 of 1 (Illinois 285, Arkansas 280) #2: UMKC Shootout Final, Game 3 of 3 (Arkansas 305, Carleton 290) #1: St. Louis Gateway Final, Game 1 of 1 (Illinois 395, Chicago 310) If you want to know more later, I'll post justification, but for now, I will let it stand. Andy
