The 1999 Penn State University Nittany Lion Invitational was run on Saturday, October 23rd. Congratulations to University of Pennsylvania "A" who went 11-1 (9-1 among non-masters teams) in convincing fashion. We are, however, not declaring this team to be the champions of the tournament due to significant and result-damaging plagiarism of their submitted packet. Hence, we awarded prizes to the top non-masters team, which also happened to be a high school team: State College Area High School "A", who went 9-3 (8-2 vs. non-masters). Second place went to the Cornell Team - who left before we could award them their prize (we will deliver it ASAP). State College "A" is also the top novice team at the tournament (team comprised solely of players in their first (or less) year of intercollegiate competition). It was an experiment to recognize and encourage (through waiving the packet submission requirement) novice teams at this tournament. I hope the other novice teams are not discouraged by the results, there were some very good teams at this tournament. State College "A", and especially Jacob Mikanowski, are simply unbelievable. Jacob is a senior - start getting your scholarships ready if you want to win national championships in the next few years. Individually, there were some errors in the initially reported statistics from Saturday afternoon - for which I apologize, and hope to have corrected here. Congratulations to Dwight Kidder (playing as Xanahara) who amassed 86.4 ppg and Fred Bush (54.17 ppg) but are ineligible for prizes as masters players. The top four non-masters players are: Jacob Mikanowski State College "A" 77.08ppg Matt Colvin Cornell 54.17ppg Felicia Wu Carnegie Mellon "A" 49.58ppg Adam Fine Johns Hopkins 45.52ppg I incorrectly gave the second place award to Felicia, when it should have gone to Matt. My apologies. Matt also stated that the award, should he receive it, should go to the next highest undergrad player. That would be Peter from Swarthmore "A" at 43.75 ppg. We will deliver another prize as soon as possible - Felicia is still very much deserving of recognition. The top four novice players (not necessarily on novice teams, hopefully we got everyone) are: Jacob Mikanowski State College "A" 77.08ppg Bryan Johns Hopkins 29.58ppg Katie Penn "B" 15.0 ppg James Penn "A" 15.0 ppg Matt Colvin is also the "Neg Award" winner. We will have to deliver his prize (a book entitled "Caligula, The Corruption of Power") at a later date. Full results follow below. Thanks to all the teams who attended, and those who submitted packets but were unable to attend. Thanks to the teams who filled in at the last minute. Many thanks to the guest moderators (Doug O'Neal, Tim Young). A huge thanks to Subash Maddipoti of Illinois who traded packets with us, allowing that 13th round, and a replacement round. I apologize for the delays during the tournament, and for the repeats in some of the questions. 13 packets of NAQT-style questions are available for purchase in electronic form (or about 4 hard copies, first-come-first-served) for $15 each.
