ESchluessel wrote that he only remembers John Irving coming up once, at ACF Regionals last year. The Carleton titles database indicates at least 12 John Irving questions in the tournaments entered into the system so far (which is maybe a quarter of all circuit tournaments played in the 80s and 90s), with title weights as follows: The World According to Garp - mentioned in 12 different questions The Hotel New Hampshire - 9 mentions A Prayer for Owen Meany - 8 Setting Free the Bears - 5 The 158-pound Marriage - 5 The Cider House Rules - 5 The Water Method Man - 3 (Several of the titles will be in the same question, of course, with answer "Irving," but there have to have been at least 12, and more likely 15 or more Irving questions to produce these numbers.) Celine, however, does come up very seldom -- which certainly doesn't surprise me, since most players won't have heard of him and therefore could not hope to answer such a question correctly. Journey to the End of Night has had 3 mentions recorded in the Carleton database, and several other Celine titles one each. I imagine, and hope, that most of those mentions came from Masters tournaments. If I were to try to work Celine in in a non-Masters tourney it would be as a bonus part, not as a tossup, as I would be pretty sure that a Celine tossup would go unanswered far more often than not in collegiate competition. Lou Harrison, though he is represented in my personal CD collection, has yet to make an appearance in the Music titles database.
