"Well, Bowling Green is pretty much a backwater campus in most academic pursuits, but one thing we do have is a good Popular Culture department. To my knowledge, BGSU is the only place around where you can get an M.A. in Pop Culture. So, TRASH would probably work at BGSU as well. Standing up for BGSU's only quality department, Brian " As somebody who actually studies popular culture academically and who writes TRASH questions for a tiny, tiny fraction of my "living", I just want to note here that the two have virtually nothing to do with each other. The academic study of popular culture tends to focus on either treating cultural texts like any other text (a more literary version) or studying the development and structure of the entertainment industries (the more historical approach). I really doubt that people want me to start writing trash questions about reception theory, Laura Mulvey on the female gaze, or the parallel development of 19th-century vaudeville and burlesque. I don't mean this post as an attack on the previous writer; I simply don't want the traditionalists who already have problems with the academic study of popular culture to have more ammunition by associating it with "trash" quizbowl. Conversely, I don't want quizbowl questions about serious popular culture study to continue to be seen as "mere" trash. --joe --joe wright
