"I'll be quite specific in my reply to Phil here." Only replying to say that I haven't chimed in on this thread (til now), so this is probably a misattribution. (Or is there another Phil out there that I'm missing?) FWIW, I personally believe that TRASH (and, more generally, trash) may be a good recruiting tool, but not from prestige. Rather, it's a student community thing -- I think this approach works especially well with IMs run on some or all trash questions, or trying to show prospects a change from more academic competition. Certain people relate to the subject matter more readily -- sometimes people quizbowl doesn't really reach out and grab any other way. I don't know that trash is necessarily deserving of prestige, as such. At least, no more so than, say, the frat house with the best parties. Even "academic" competition tests pretty superficial knowledge; trash tests superficial knowledge of a fairly superficial set of subjects. You may consider it the most /fun/ tournament format; if that's prestige, so be it. But if you have cred in NAQT or ACF, I'd be hard-pressed to think any TRASH cred you have somehow outweighs it. AFAIK, there /is/ no official line on this from TRASH, so I certainly don't presume to speak for it. Of course, we'll never get the money for the TRASH Megaplex unless you guys keep attending tournaments, so...okay, sure, TRASH is the Superbowl of academic competition. Buy our questions, attend our tournaments, support our high-flying lifestyles. :) phil
