Howdy, all-- Last weekend, November 8 and 9, Valencia CC in Orlando hosted its sixth annual Delta Burke Invitational. 28 teams from Florida and Georgia (and one from Maryland) competed in two 14-team round-robin divisions before the top four from each bracket went to playoffs. The playoff teams were Bainbridge College (Ga), Abraham Baldwin (Ga.), Central Florida CC, Broward CC, Dalton College (Ga.), Okaloosa Walton CC (Fl), and Valencia Gold and Red. In the final, Bainbridge beat Abraham Baldwin by 15 when the latter's players couldn't come up with either 15-point part of a bonus on silent film directors (the answers were Mack Sennett and D.W. Griffith). So it goes. The top five scorers were (in order) Caleb Schmidt of Central Florida, Ebony Hutchinson of Bainbridge, Amanda Richardson of Abraham Baldwin, Elissa Caffery of Valencia Red, and Mikey Alday of Bainbridge (kid brother of Mitch Alday, whom some of you might remember playing for Berry College). I'll be happy to send more detailed stats to anyone interested. I've got 16 rounds of delicious ACF extra-lite gold style packs available for trade. In an era of much discussion of increasing question difficulty, these pyramidally sculpted toss-ups will provide a reasonable challenge in their openers to experienced players and good workout material for newbies. If interested, please contact me at cborglum at valenciacc dot edu. Finally, if you've made it this far, if you know of community colleges in your area which have quizbowl programs, please pass along my e-mail to them; I'm trying to help build more awareness of the game among CCs. Right now only about five states seem to have thriving circuits, and I will appreciate any efforts to spread the word. --chris borglum
