Subash makes plenty of wonderful suggestions that should be followed. Of course, he's scaling difficulty towards what he expects for ACF Regionals. For exmaple, I think that Cup of Gold could be a suitable first clue for Updike for a lower level of competition. The only adjustment to his suggestions I would make is in his reworking quoted below. It is plausible to buzz in before "this novel" with Clym Yeobright, and while that may be promptible under ACF rules, the fewer possible prompts the better. I would suggest rather writing: "This work's protagonist, a former diamond merchant in Paris who is now losing his eyesight, is Clym Yeobright." Also, many of the moderators who I consider among the best, will give at least a slight emphasis on "This novel" to help make clear as early as possible that the question is going for a work rather than a character or author. But, yeah, Subash's post is an excellent idea. My only hope is that he keeps all the original, unedited packets and distributes them when people buy electronic copies or when they get put online in years hence, so that people can look back and see what changes he made and which questions he left unused and perhaps figure out on their own why. --- In quizbowl_at_yahoogroups.com, suby10 <no_reply_at_y...> wrote: For example: "The > former diamond merchant in Paris who is now losing his eyesight is > this novel's protagonist, Clym Yeobright."
