Yup, since the 1960s. And it's never hurt us. Discourse: the way the game works over here, we play two formats: the quasi-University Challenge 10 point starters and 15 points bonuses (which was originally based on College Bowl) and the NAQT-derived power starters and 30 points bonuses. Generally, the UC game is played over a longer period with shorter easier starters, and rewards speed on the starters more; we therefore use it for IM tournaments, as it's a familiar format. The longer format is used for the more "serious" games, as we find that it tends to reward the teams with more knowledge more consistently. The difference, though, in the end, is largely ideological: some players go with speed and individual play over teamwork and deep knowledge, and some vice versa. Pretty much everyone puts up with both formats though. So my advice to those dithering is to give the shorter format a try - with the right questions (and I'm happy to talk to whoever was running that tournament about the editing / guidelines - rob_linham at yahoo.co.uk) and played in the right spirit, it's different but it's still fun. r. ===== -- Rob Linham: E-mail: rob_linham_at_...
