Dear Academic Team Coaches and Everyone Else, Boston University College Bowl is extremely proud to announce our 5th annual Bay State Quiz Bowl Classic, a high school academic tournament to be held on Saturday, March 29, 2003, at Boston University's College of Arts and Sciences (725 Commonwealth Avenue; Boston, Mass.). Over the years, we like to think the tournament has helped to expand the high school quiz circuit in the Northeast, giving teams a chance to play in an organized setting against strong competition. Since we hosted the first BSQBC in March of 1999, we've had more than 25 different high schools and academies attend, some from as far away as Georgia and Michigan. However, our strongest base remains New England and New York. For those of you who have played here before, our format will remain the same as in previous years. Matches are played between two teams using a lockout buzzer system or alternate signaling system. A toss- up question is read, and the player who answers it correctly earns a set of bonus questions for his team. The bonus may not be in the same subject area as the toss-up, but it is available to all the players on that team. Conferring among players is allowed on bonus questions, but not on toss-ups. Subject material is varied; questions will include, but not be limited to history, science, literature, religion, philosophy, geography, sports, and current events. National Academic Quiz Tournaments (NAQT), LLC, will again provide questions for the BSQBC. We will be playing on NAQT's Invitational Set #34 [IS-34]. Schools may send up to 3 teams at this point -- if any school is interested in sending more, please contact us and we can discuss it on a case-by-case basis. While we will not put a formal cap on the field at this time, we reserve the right to cut off registrations at any time if we think we're getting too many teams to handle. It probably won't come to that, but still, it bears mentioning. Teams may consist of any number of players, but no more than 4 team members may play at the same time (basically, it means substitutions are allowed). The cost for participating will remain $40 per team, with any team able to bring a working lockout buzzer system (or suitable alternative) receiving a $5 discount for each. We do ask if your team has access to any such equipment to please try and bring it, since our biggest problem each year is getting a lockout system for every game room. Also, teams coming from long distances, or those bringing multiple teams, may be eligible for discounts in entry fees. Don't hesitate to ask! As in past years, we will provide a variety of snacks and juices for players and coaches before the tournament, as well as trophies to winning teams and top players. While we will not provide lunch, there are numerous cheap fast food options within a five-minute walk of the tournament site. Sometimes being in the heart of Boston has its advantages. If you are interested in registering or getting any more information on the Bay State Quiz Bowl Classic, please contact Tournament Directors Jon Couture ( cooch at joncouture dot com ) and Harrison Magy ( hmagy at bu dot edu ). We hope the quality and professionalism of our event in past years, something we pride ourselves on, is enough to convince teams to make the trip to Boston, even if the Red Sox won't yet be in town. Thanks for reading, and we hope to see you all at the 5th annual Bay State Quiz Bowl Classic! Jon Couture & Harrison Magy Co-Tournament Directors, BSQBC 5 ---------- * Because I'll possibly hear about this later, we're not trying to undercut the Franklin Invitational, also running March 29. After talking to the teams who've attended our tournament in the past, this was the date most agreeable to all. While I don't think our markets overlap enough for anyone to be overly concerned, just seemed like something to address before the tersely worded e-mails start coming in.
