There are obviously advantages and disadvantages to a single-elimination style format. Some excellent points have been made and it is obvious that sometimes good teams are sent home early in a single-elimination format. Strangely, I don't here anyone from Michigan, UMCP, or Illinois complaining on this club board. All teams knew going in that Penn Bowl was going to have a 16 team, single-elimination playoff. And those who lost understand that those things happen. If you don't like single elim., don't come to Penn Bowl. My team, Yale A, the eventual winner, understands that our victory at Penn Bowl means nothing more than "We won Penn Bowl." It does not make us inherently better than Illinois or CWRU or anyone else. But our win should not be devalued by those who think that single elimination is unfair. I, too, thought that the ET Chuck packet was poor. But everyone heard the same questions and the teams that were upset didn't hit as many as the teams that won. The argument is, then, is moot. For those who hate single elim, there's always NAQT nationals and countless other tournaments that use other methods for determining a champion. For those who like single elim, there's always Penn Bowl next year. Personally, I like round robin. But we did benefit from single elim. on Saturday. Aaron Lichtig
