Brief results for NAQT Midsouth Sectionals at UTC on Feb. 8, 2003: DIVISION I 1st: Florida A 2nd: Emory A 3rd: Florida State 4th: Emory B (by playoff over Georgia A; see below for explanation.) Emory B was also the D I undergrad winner. DIVISION II 1st: Florida C (by playoff) 2nd: Georgia B 3rd: Kentucky 4th: Florida B FORMAT By adding a 2nd UTC house team, we had the luck to have 9 teams in each division. As recommended, the tournament ran 14 rounds (9 rounds round robin + 5/4 split.) We announced that there would be playoffs only in the event of a tie by record. After those 14 rounds, the standings were: DIVISION I Team Name Win-Loss Points Opp Pts Florida A 12-0 5475 1580 Emory A 9-3 3890 2375 South Florida 7-5 3110 2470 Emory B 6-5 2155 1815 Georgia A 6-6 2300 2990 Florida State A 5-7 1795 3045 North Florida 4-7 1900 2100 Furman 2-9 905 3225 Clemson 1-10 730 2660 DIVISION II Team Name Win-Loss Points Opp Pts Florida C 10-2 2290 1430 Georgia B 10-2 2010 1325 Kentucky 8-4 2055 1175 Florida B 7-5 2175 1515 UTC B 6-5 950 1250 Florida State B 5-7 1385 1725 Athens State 3-8 1360 1415 UTC A 2-9 865 1715 Macon State 1-10 455 1995 PLAYOFFS Florida C defeated Georgia B 220-150 in a one-game playoff for 1st in Division II. No other playoffs were necessary in Division II. In Division I, the first three places were decided by record. But we did have a 4th place trophy, and it became the source of controversy. Georgia A raised the issue that because they had the better record after the 1st 9 rounds, they thus played a tougher schedule in Rounds 10-14 than Emory B -- which to my mind was moot, as NAQT rules stated that all games must count -- but also that they played *one more game* for that reason. The two teams ultimately had the same number of wins but a different number of losses (Emory B 6-5, Georgia A 6-6.) After rereading the rules and the elimination requirements, and finding no guidance on this matter, I pulled a Solomon and decreed a best-of-3 playoff, with Emory B given a one-game advantage for their better record. Emory B won 225-175, rendering a 3rd match unnecessary. As NAQT's rules and procedures continue to evolve, I'm sure they'll address the question of unequal numbers of matches for future tournaments. The good news is that NAQT's bids are not awarded automatically upon placement, so my on-the-fly decision should have no impact. (Besides -- shoot, most of the time we don't even *have* a 4th place trophy to award.)
