Hats off to the 15 teams qualified for ACUI College Bowl Nationals. For everyone else, despair not! Once again this year, we offer another quizbowl option for that weekend: UTC will host the 5th annual Moon Pie (TM)* Classic on Sat., Apr. 26, 2003. This is an "ACF Lite" style tournament, with untimed rounds of 20 tossups (worth 10 pts. each) and bonuses (worth a possible 30 pts. each.) Packet submission is preferred and gets you a healthy discount, but we will accept teams without packet submission, and newcomers are exempt from the packet submission requirement. We will also have a trash tournament, the RC Cola Classic, on Sun., Apr. 27; details will follow in another message. ELIGIBILITY: The Moon Pie Classic is for teams composed of up to 4 currently-enrolled students from the same school, regardless of grade level or experience. Alternates are allowed, but only 4 can play in any given round. The field will be split into two divisions, based on experience level. Div. II teams are: * Teams from 4-year colleges composed of players in their 1st or 2nd year of intercollegiate QB competition. (Important: since the untimed format & ACF style differs so much from the CBI style, we won't count experience in CBI or HCASC tournaments.) * Junior college teams, regardless of players' prior experience All other teams will compete in Division I. Multiple teams from the same school may play. Field is tentatively capped at 44 teams. LOCATION & SCHEDULE: Again this year it's Saturday only. Registration begins at 9 AM EDT and the tournament starts at 10. Based on past years, expect it to end around 8:30-9 PM. Tournament HQ is 129 Grote Hall, with matches in both Grote and Holt Halls on the UT-Chattanooga campus. FEES: Again, we do not require packets but offer generous discounts for packet submission. Fees therefore can range from $60 to $110 for a team. Teams seeking more discounts can cut fees further by bringing officials to Chattanooga for our high school tournament on Sat., March 22, and/or the RC Cola Classic trash tournament on Apr. 27 (the day after the Moon Pie.) E-mail me for further details at steinhic [at] bellsouth [dot] net. Base fee $100 per team Discounts: - $15 for packet (25 tossups, 25 boni, meeting the guidelines set forth in the next message) submitted by Sat., Apr. 5 - $10 more if packet is submitted by Sun., Mar. 23 - $5 for a working lockout buzzer system (one discount per team, but bring extras and we will give further discounts if we would otherwise have run short of buzzers) - $10 for each team after the first from the same school Surcharge: + $10 for teams not submitting a packet. [Packet deadline is midnight Mon., April 16; no packets accepted thereafter except by prior arrangement.] Special deal for newcomers: Teams appearing at their first collegiate tournament at UTC receive a $25 discount and are exempt from the packet requirement. [Important: if submitting, each team from the same school will need to submit a separate packet, which must be blind to members of the school's other teams.] PACKET GUIDELINES: The difficulty level should be suitable for less experienced collegiate teams, but still structured in the ACF style. (If you need more info on what that entails, e-mail me.) Questions should be submitted electronically, preferably in MS Word (RTF is also OK.) We ask that required portions of answers be in bold type, and that all answers be preceded by the word "Answer:". You'd be amazed how much time it saves when that's done on the front end. To make editing easier, we ask for 25 tossups and 25 bonuses per packet, distributed as follows: Literature 5 Recommended: at least 2 20th century, at least 2 pre-20th century; at least 2 U.S./Canadian, at least 2 non-U.S./Canadian Sciences 5 Required: at least 1 each of biology, physics, and chemistry History 5 Recommended: at least 2 20th century, at least 2 pre-20th century; at least 2 U.S./Canadian, at least 2 non-U.S./Canadian The remaining 10 should contain at least 1 each and no more than 3 of: Philosophy/religion/myth Fine arts Social sciences incl. geography Popular culture General knowledge/interdisciplinary LODGINGS: The Clarion Hotel is holding discount rooms through April 12 for Fri. night 4/26 and/or Sat. night 4/27 at $66/night plus tax for up to 4 people.
