There's not any, really, except for the ever-nebulous ideas of performance
"peaking" when it counts most, which I certainly agree is less likely (given a
certain amount of skill) in quizbowl than in other games. I think that
excitement creates interest, which hopefully encourages participation and
ultimately, improvement...but that idea has by no means been proven (or
disproven).
