The Forrestal Building of the Department of Energy hosted the D.C. and Maryland regional tournaments for the National Science Bowl today. The winner advances to the National Science Bowl in mid-May. Tossups are worth 4 points, bonuses are 10. Negs exist, but are points credited to the other team. For the first game of the Maryland final, a "Science Discovery" question was unveiled - students had four minutes to solve a problem with scales and beakers, showing their work. It was an interesting concept, but the time restrictions didn't seem to work too well and it seemed unable to fit into the game format well. Anyway. 7 teams competed in a single-round robin for D.C., with four making playoffs. 17 competed from Maryland, with nine making playoffs. Playoffs were double-elim. Last year's champs were Sidwell Friends and Richard Montgomery. D.C. Banneker beat Washington International (WIU) St. Anselm's beat Sidwell Friends Banneker beat St. Anselm's Sidwell eliminated WIU Sidwell eliminated St. Anselm's Sidwell beat Banneker (1 loss) Banneker 52-34 Sidwell (eliminated) D.C. champ - BANNEKER Maryland Landon and Great Mills lost all their playoff games and finished tied for eighth. Then.... La Plata eliminated Churchill (7th) Centennial eliminated La Plata (6th) JM Bennett eliminated Centennial (5th) Montgomery Blair eliminated JM Bennett (4th) Montgomery Blair 68 - 12 Fort Hill (3rd) Montgomery Blair 48 - 23 Wooton (1 loss) Montgomery Blair 78 - 48 Wooton (44-14 at the half, Wooton brought it close before Blair went on a tear to clinch it) Maryland champ - MONGTOMERY BLAIR As an FYI, Wooton beat Blair in the first playoff game. Blair is also a magnet school, and three of their players came from Wooton's area. Hence the comment by a Blair player indicating that (not a specific quote) 'Blair turned them down, and yet they beat us'.
