I don't know your name but being from San Diego (and growing up dow n the street from UCSd) I'm thrilled that finally someone has taken the initiative to get a club going at UCSD. Obviously there's a ton of information worth knowing and hopefully others besides me can fill in what I miss. Essentially if you follow this group consistently you'll know when tournaments are going to be held. UC Berkeley, UCLA, CAL Tech, Stanford and sometimes UC Irvine hold tournaments throughout the year. The calendar is generally pretty much filled September-Mid November and then Late January through March with National Tournaments being held in April (sometimes late March). Then there are summer events as well, usually late June, early July. I'm sure at least one member of this group has taken the time to make a webpage that lists all upcoming tournaments but I'm remiss as to who. Coming up in the fall, UCLA hosts an undergraduate tournament. There's a competition called ACF Fall which is geared toward new players, the location of which rotates. UC Berkeley hosts the Western Invitational Tournament in late October which has generally been the biggest fall tournament. Cal Tech hosts Technophobia usually the weekend before Thanksgiving. USC sometimes hosts an invitational as well. It's unfortunate your student body will not help you fund a buzzer system - something that would on most accounts be deemed an appropriate use of funds. I suppose all schools do it differently - I believe at Berkeley this was not an issue. There are some schools nearby that may be willing to lend you a system to practice on until you can procure your own. In terms of helping you build your own knowledge on ways to build up your club, visit the NAQT (National Academic Quiz Tournaments) webpage which has articles on how to start a club. http://www.naqt.com/HowTo/start-a-college-team.html Also a fantastic resource is The University of Michigan-Ann Arbor's Maize pages which is farily comprehensive and will provide you ways to hook up with other schools as well as tons of relevant information. http://www.umich.edu/~uac/mac/maize/ That should be a good start - I'm sure others here would be more than willing to help you get your feet off the ground.
