UTC will host an abbreviated academic masters tournament, Moc Masters, on Sunday, August 3, 2003. Anyone who wishes to play is eligible. This will be in conjunction with our Muck Masters trash tournament (Sat. 8/2.) You can play in one or both, or even read for one and earn discounts for the other. Again this year the questions will be edited by me; even though the name says "Masters" I'm aiming for moderate difficulty. Packet submission is expected; I will accept teams without packets, but the fees will be higher. ELIGIBILITY: The tournament is open to all sentient beings capable of pressing a buzzer, regardless of age, academic affiliation, grade level or experience. Teams are composed of up to 4 players. For those wishing to join a team as free agents, or teams wishing to add another player, I will send out matchmaking information at some point. SCHEDULE: This tournament is Sunday only, and designed to end at a reasonable hour. Registration will begin at 8:30 AM EDT and the tournament will begin at 9. I hope to have a round robin of 9 rounds, which would get us into playoffs by 5:30 PM or so. FEES: Base fee: $70 per team of 4 players [ASSUMES PACKET SUBMITTED BY MIDNIGHT SUN., JULY 20; see below for packet specs] Discounts: - $5 for a working lockout buzzer system - $5 for each empty chair on the team (i.e., a one-person team without a buzzer would be charged $55) - $10 for a full-time moderator supplied for Moc Masters and/or Muck Masters (the trash tournament on Sat. 8/2) - $20 for submitting a blind round for Muck Masters (obviously, available to non-Muck Masters participants only) Minimum fee after discounts: $35 Penalties: + $15 for packet received between midnight Sun., July 20, and midnight Sun., July 27 + $30 for no packet submitted LOCATION: Tournament headquarters will be 124 Holt Hall on the UT-Chattanooga campus and (barring an unexpected surge in field size from the past 2 years) the whole tournament will take place in Holt. LODGINGS: I haven't arranged for a hotel discount anywhere, but if enough people express an interest I'll try to get one. PACKET SUBMISSION GUIDELINES: To make editing easier, we ask for 25 tossups and 25 bonuses per packet, distributed as follows: Literature 5 Recommended: at least 2 20th century, at least 2 pre-20th century at least 2 U.S./Canadian, at least 2 non-U.S./Canadian Sciences 5 Required: at least 1 each of biology, physics, and chemistry History 5 Recommended: at least 2 20th century, at least 2 pre-20th century at least 2 U.S./Canadian, at least 2 non-U.S./Canadian The remaining 10 should contain at least 1 each and no more than 3 of: Philosophy/religion/myth Fine arts Social sciences incl. geography Popular culture General knowledge/interdisciplinary As for the style: Tossups -- average length 3 sentences. We want questions that begin with lesser-known details and gradually get easier. And please don't violate the pronoun rule -- e.g.,, if your first pronoun is "He..." the answer should be the person, not a title. Bonuses -- all bonuses worth a possible 30 pts.; no single-part all-or-nothing bonuses. Bonuses should be such that a novice team stands a good chance of getting at least 10 pts., a good team 20, and the best teams all 30 pts. Finally, it'll make life easier on me if you can submit the packet as either MS Word or RTF, set the margins at .5" all around, and insert the word "Answer:" followed by a tab before each answer. DIRECTIONS: From Atlanta or Knoxville -- take I-75 to Chattanooga, then I-24 west towards downtown. Once in town follow the freeway splitoff for U.S. 27 N./Downtown. From 27 N. take the 4th St. exit, within sight of the Tennessee Aquarium. Go right on 4th St. (you have no choice) and follow it for ca. 1 mile. When you reach the UTC Arena, turn right on Mabel St. Mabel St. goes around a curve and becomes E. 5th St. Shortly thereafter, across from a cemetery, you'll reach Holt Hall. Just past Holt Hall turn right to enter the parking lot. Grote is the other building adjoining that lot. * From Nashville and points west/north: Take I-24 east to Chattanooga. As you round Moccasin Bend (freeway goes alongside river) watch for two exit lanes on the right; take the less rightward of the two, which will have signs above it for U.S. 27 N. Rest of directions are the same as above. * From Birmingham and points southwest: Take I-59 to the outskirts of Chattanooga, where it dead-ends into I-24. Get on I-24 East and follow the Nashville directions from there. CONTACT: Tournament director is of course Charlie Steinhice, coach of UTC's quizbowl team.
