After braving some early morning rain in the Atlanta area, eight teams competed in the first annual North Avenue Trade School Summer Open: Bill Bixby's Big Ass Communist 18-Wheeler Giovanna Deformata GT Alums Florida (who at a time too late to change renamed themselves the Jayhawk Martyrs Squad) Seth Kendall Pac-Men Screaming Monkey Stick North Florida At the end of the initial nine round double bye round robin the ranks stood thus: 1. BBBAC18W (7-0 436.43 ppg) 2. Florida (5-2 252.14 ppg defeated Giovanni Deformata head to head) 3. Giovanni Deformata (5-2 350.71 ppg lost to Florida head to head) 4. GT Alums (4-3 293.57 ppg) 5. Seth Kendall (3-4 272.86 ppg defeated Pac-Men head to head) 6. Pac-Men (3-4 230 ppg lost to Seth Kendall head to head) 7. Screaming Monkey Stick (1-6 78.57 ppg) 8. North Florida (0-7 54.29 ppg) The Golden Chicken award for best tossup to neg ratio went to Seth Kendall, with a ratio of 9.33. For his accuracy he received a cookbook, 2001 Chicken Recipes. Congratulations Seth. Also at the end of the prelims the top five players on individual score received books as a prize. 1. Kelly McKenzie BBBAC18W 90.7 ppg (The Essential Guide to Art Deco) 2. Seth Kendall Seth Kendall 75.7 ppg (The Quark and the Jaguar) 3. Raj Dhuwalia Giovanni Deformata 62.1 ppg (Grun's Timetables of History) 4. Kevin Comer Florida 50.7 ppg (Undaunted Courage) 5. Jason King GT Alums 37.9 ppg (The Works of Plato) Now for what you're all interested in, the final results. After the prelims the teams were bracketed into upper and lower divisions and played out a three round round robin, carrying over records from the prelims with the restriction that a lower bracket team could not outrank an upper bracket team. At the end of this we had: 1. BBBAC18W (8-2 407 ppg 1-1 v. Giovanni Deformata) 2. Giovanni Deformata (8-2 348 ppg 1-1 v. BBBAC18W) 3. GT Alums (6-4 303.5 ppg) 4. Florida (5-5 233 ppg) 5. PAC-Men (6-4 283 ppg) 6. Seth Kendall 5-5 (5-5 291 ppg) 7. Screaming Monkey Stick (2-8 94 ppg) 8. North Florida (0-10 62.5 ppg) With the potential disaster of a four way tie for first place averted in the final round of regular play, we found ourselves in a two-way tie between Giovanni Deformata and Bill Bixby's Big Ass Communist 18- Wheeler. We then proceeded to a tiebreaker round, which concluded with Bill Bixby coming out on top 370-275 in a match that was tied at 250 going into tossup 17. For Kelly McKenzie and Robert Osborne, a $30 gift certificate to Amazon.com, for Raj Dhuwalia, Amy Harvey, Elissa Caffery and Mitch Alday, $15 gift certificates for their second place finish. I would now like to thank Chris Moody, Andrew Moore, Scott Buckley and Robin Richards for moderating and Erik Webb for keeping up with the stats. Despite a bizarre cosmic confluence of Oedipus at Colonnus repeats, I feel that this tournament has been successful and everybody seemed to enjoy themselves. More in depth statistics will at some point soon be available at the Georgia Tech team website: www.cyberbuzz.gatech.edu/quizbowl Many thanks for those who came out to play and weather all the problems inherent to a first-time tournament director, and congratulations.
