     Although I am no longer part of the South Carolina team, I am 
helping with the MASER undergraduate tournament on October 4th.  The 
tournament has not yet attracted as many teams as its organizer would 
like.  I hope that several other teams will join up soon.
     I know the MASER TD, Erick Bousman, to be a responsible and 
diligent young man.  He has worked hard on this tournament for 
several months and I have no doubt that all will go smoothly.  Please 
don't overlook this tournament just because it is new.
     Having served as editor and author of most questions, I can 
vouch for their quality.  Although many bonus questions are rather 
difficult, there are few toss-up questions that a well-read freshman 
won't be able to answer.  I think all players will find the questions 
interesting and learn a lot.
     The MASER will be of interest to the seemingly large number of 
people who think it important to bring Historically Black Colleges 
into quiz bowl because it has a huge percentage of them.  I don't 
think the HBCs signed up for MASER have ever participated in other 
events not sponsored by Honda, so this is a good chance to welcome 
them.
      For all those reasons, I encourage all Southern teams to 
contact Erick and be at USC's tournament next month.
