It looks like the Center of the Universe Open (UTC's fall collegiate quizbowl 10/18/03) will have a large field. So far I have confirmation from the teams listed below. Those marked * are also competing in the Big Lots trash tournament on Oct. 19. Gratuitous plug #1: there's still time to sign up for either or both tournaments! Gratuitous plug #2: A big field means a big demand for readers and scorekeepers, and several of UTC's most stalwart readers have recently moved to far-flung places like New Hampshire and Minnesota. So if you're within driving distance of Chattanooga and want to come lend a hand, we'll buy you dinner. For details on either of the above, e-mail me at steinhic [at] bellsouth [dot] net. Anyway, here's the field confirmed to date: Athens State (1 team Div. 2) Auburn-Montgomery (1 Div. 2) Emory 3 (2 Div. 1, 1 Div. 2) Florida 3 (divisions TBD) *Furman (1 Div. 2) Kentucky 2-3 (at least 1 Div. 1, 1 Div. 2) North Carolina 2 (divisions TBD) Oxford 2 (both Div. 2, I think) *Tulane 2-3 (divisions TBD) *UTC 1-3 (1 Div. 2 for sure, others TBD) Georgia Perimeter College is probable, which puts us at somewhere between 18 and 23 teams. And that's not counting several of the usual suspects, or other teams from whom I've had inquiries, from whom I haven't gotten confirmation. Among them are Armstrong State, Berry, Florida State, Georgia, Georgia Tech, (*)Macon State, Morehouse, Tennessee, Vanderbilt, and Virginia Tech. So we might have 30 or more teams before the dust clears.
