As many people know, TRASH, for the last two years, has instituted a special "virgin fee" for teams playing in their first TRASH Regional. TRASH feels such a fee encourages CBI-only, NAQT-only or newbie teams on the circuit to take a chance on something different, and will pay to play at further TRASH tourneys at a slightly higher price down the line. This year, TRASH asked regional hosts to pen personalized e-mails to teams TRASH believes have never attended a TRASH Regional. In addition, I have written follow-up e-mails to more than 70 teams (contacts found on Craig Barker's Maize Pages). Sound silly? Think again. A few days ago, I received e-mails from three schools, thanking TRASH for sending them information on Regionals. One of the schools is very interested in attending the South Regional at Emory. Based on the text of these letters, it appears they would have never known about this tournament if it weren't for TRASH and regional hosts writing letters. They don't regularly check this newsgroup or tournament list websites; they need a different way to gain access to tournament info. Sometimes, all it takes is a personal invitation to lure a team to your tournament. Teams/players feel special when they receive a personal invitation; a general announcement on a website does not matter to them. And maybe, just maybe, these teams will appear in more tournaments.
