Congratulations to Fountains of Wayne Chrebet (James Quintong, Stephen Bahnaman, Gerry Tansey, & Mike Ferrara), winners of the Big Lots Clearance Open trash tournament at UTC on 10/19/03. For their achievements, each member won their very own copy of the TV-movie/pilot Brenda Starr! starring Brooke Shields. Second place went to Bowling for Soupy Sales (Joseph Dion, Jason Russell, Chris Hendry, Mark Franklin), who each got a cassette of Good Morning Starshine and other songs by Oliver! Third went to Dren Presents... The Dren Show... Starring Dren! (Dren Rollins, Eileen Steinhice) and fourth went to Vicodin Killed the Radio Star (Mica Hilson, Mike Tsybulevski, Wesley Mathews.) For their efforts, they were rewarded with polka tapes. Congratulations also to tournament MVP Mica Hilson and to Chris Hendry, winner of James Quintong's all-cover-versions music round. GRATITUDE Thanks go first and foremost to Jeremy White, Ben Lea, and Dave Murphy for the oh-so-entertaining questions from FOGHAT, which Big Lots mirrored. Thanks also to house readers Steve Taylor, Tom Michael, Chris Sloan, and Shannon Moore, and to Wally Edmondson (with help from Steve and Shannon) for maintaining stats between rounds while still playing. TEAM RESULTS The 11-team field was divided into two brackets for a round robin, after which no two teams had the same record: Team Name (affiliation) Division Win - Loss Bowling for Soupy Sales (mixed) Bartman 4-0 Dren Presents…The Dren Show, Starring…Dren! (Tulane) Maier 1-4 FUQT(UP) (Furman) Maier 0-5 After the music round prelims and a lunch break, the tournament continued with three rounds of modified Swiss pairings, a format that proved kind to the 4th place teams but brutal to the 3rd place teams in each bracket. Results at the end of regulation were: Team Name (Division) Win-Loss Points Opp Pts Diff/GM Bowling for Soupy Sales (Bartman) 7-0 1985 760 175.00 Fountains of Wayne Chrebet (Maier) 7-1 2481 815 208.25 Dren Presents the Dren Show... Sure enough, it was. After Bowling for Soupy Sales got a 10-point win in Round 8, Fountains of Wayne Chrebet won the playoff rematch 255-160, then took the shootout 110-70 to take top prize. INDIVIDUAL STATS All-Star awards were given to the top 10 scorers. Zorak (Eileen Steinhice) of Dren Presents the Dren Show Featuring Dren was Title IX All-Star and won a book of poetry by Jewel. Her teammate Brak (Dren Rollins) received the Dren Rollins Award for Outstanding Achievement in Buzzer Aggression, lapping the field with 15 negs. It should be noted that all 43 players in the field, one of whom was an inanimate object, recorded at least one tossup -- and 34 of the 43 recorded at least one interrupt. It should also be noted that Indiana's Wesley Mathews came within one tossup of achieving an unprecedented double, finishing first in PPG in the academic tournament and last in the trash tournament on the same weekend.
