Conserve School Frosh/Soph team edges Varsity 2-1 in best of three
series for Challenge Championship

Ten teams traveling from as far as Beaver Dam and Appleton participated
on Saturday, November 8, in the first ever Conserve School
Varsity/Frosh-Soph Challenge. Six Varsity teams and 4 Frosh/Soph Teams
played a full round robin to determine a Varsity and a Frosh/Soph
Champion. After eight rounds, Conserve Varsity A and Conserve Frosh/Soph
A were both undefeated and thereby clinched their respective
championships. The two teams then faced off in a best of three
Championship Series to determine the overall "Challenge Champion." 

The Frosh/Soph team handily defeated the Varsity 470-145 in Game 1, but
the Varsity was able to rally in the second game for a come from behind
victory by the score of 300-255. The Varsity then seemed to clinch the
tournament when they opened up a 25 point lead with less than a minute
to play in the third and final game, but Sophomore Caroline Merrifield
was able to beat the Varsity team to the buzzer on the final toss-up of
the match, and the sophomores converted two of three bonus questions for
a final score of 285-280. 

Rounding out the top four in the Varsity Division were Conserve Varsity
B, Appleton East and Wayland Academy. Second Place in the Frosh/Soph
Division was won by Conserve Frosh/Soph B. Top scorers in the tournament
were: Johnny Nelson (Sophomore, Conserve) with 60.5 points per game,
Andrew Ackell (Senior, Appleton East) with 47.8 ppg, Daniel Thornton
(Senior, Conserve)with 47.7 ppg and Justin Seighman (Senior, Wayland)
with 44.4 ppg. 

Conserve School's Varsity's record improved to 16 wins and 5 losses and
they now prepare for December tournaments in Chassell, MI and Madison.
The Frosh/Soph Team's record now stands at 10 wins and 1 loss and they
get ready for their first away tournament of the year on December 13 in
Rockford, IL.
