Howdy, all-- Though it took place on November 7 and 8, here finally are the results from the Valencia Community College Fall Invitational, aka the Delta Burke. 28 teams from 19 CCs in Florida and Georgia competed in two 14-team brackets. After the round robin, the top four in each bracket moved on to a single-elimination playoff, with these results: Quarterfinals: Valencia over Tallahassee Palm Beach over Bainbridge Seminole over Okaloosa-Walton (which had gone 13-0 in the round robin) Broward White over Broward Blue Semifinals: Valencia over Palm Beach Seminole over Broward White Champeenship: Valencia (415) over Seminole (100) The top five scorers were Hannah Fay (Okaloosa-Walton) 62.31 Josh H (Bainbridge) 60.38 Elissa Caffery (Valencia) 56.92 Samuel Sklaroff (Broward Blue) 44.92 Jerry He (Indian River) 43.85 My sincerest gratitude goes to Sarah Mordan-McCombs and others from DePauw for writing science questions, to Chris White for sharing SNEWT packs, to Robert Whaples of Wake Forest for writing a good round, to Raj Dhuwalia for writing some science and providing valuable editing advice, to Seth Teitler for helping out with science, to Raj Bhan for tossing in a couple ass-hard science questions on short notice, to all who read and scored at the tournament, and especially to Matt C. of Iowa State for sharing his Fall Invitational packs with me. A mildly amusing note (to me, anyway): Matt is now known and somewhat reviled by a whole generation of CC quizbowlers who, after hearing a couple of his rounds (six eventually were used), would universally groan when told that coming up was a "Matt pack." Of course, Matt's questions were excellent, with good topics and pyramidal structure, but some were on the tough side for the average (and really newbie) CC teams (though Valencia, OWCC, and a couple others did fine on them). That's my fault, not Matt's, obviously, and I couldn't have run the tournament without his help. It's easy even for me to forget how little of what we consider to be easy, canonical stuff many brand-new CC players don't knoow (most of our players didn't play in high school, and for many this tournament was their first). In any case, I think it's pretty funny that there's now some kid in Sebring, Florida, who grumbles at the mention of Matt's name. Finally, the Delta Burke questions are available for trade; be aware, however, that if you have the SNEWT (1 round and maybe 2-3 assorted toss-ups) or ISU Fall Invitational (6 rounds), there will be some overlap, though you're still talking nine other fresh rounds. These are mACF extra-lite gold draft packs, excellent for novice players, but with lead-ins interesting enough to challenge grizzled vets.
