This is preliminary announcement of the 2004 NAQT North Central Sectional Championship Tournament to be held the weekend of February 6-7 at Carleton College, Northfield, Minnesota. The tournament will of course follow NAQT rules and standards, as detailed on the NAQT website. Tournament formats will depend on the number of teams registering in each division, but there will surely be separate play between Division I and II, and for any field size from 4 to 24 we will employ one of the recommended formats detailed at http://www.naqt.com/format/index.html. Please note: our bias in selecting a format will be toward giving all teams a greater number of games, out of the 20 rounds available, and therefore ours will probably be a two-day tournament, commencing Friday evening and continuing Saturday. A Saturday-only tournament is also possible, should a smaller-than-expected number of teams in each division wind up suiting that arrangement better, but Friday-Saturday is considerably more likely. (This may be a good sectional to attend, even if you're not in our immediate geographical region, if you're the sort of team that subscribes with enthusiasm to the philosophy of "the more we get to play, the better!") As always with NAQT, champions will be determined for overall Division I, Division I undergraduate-only, and Division II. Performance at sectionals is the basis for invitations issued to the NAQT Intercollegiate Championship Tournament, scheduled in 2004 for April 2-3 at Washington University, St. Louis. Fees: Base fee for first team: $110 Base fee for second and subsequent teams: $80 Discounts: Buzzer sets: $10 off per fully functional set Full-time reader/scorekeeper volunteers: $20 off per person used Minimum fee per team after discounts: $60 More details will follow in January, but for now you may register teams or ask questions by contacting Eric Hillemann at ehillema at carleton dot edu.
