For those people worrying about the lack of West Coast packet submission tournaments, you can help avoid the Pacific Coast finishing at the Mendoza Line in terms of successful packet submission tournaments this year by submitting packets to and attending UCLA's Aztlán Cup, to be held on March 6, 2004. Packet submission is not required, but for the above reason, please feel free to do so. The first deadline has passed, but $40+ worth of discounts can be obtained by packet submission and bringing buzzers. Difficulty should be comparable to other West Coast invitationals, i.e. WIT, Technophobia, Cardinal Classic-slightly more difficult than NAQT Sectionals. FEE STRUCTURE: Base Fee: $100 Second Team: -$20 Third Team: -$30 Full Packet submitted by 11:59 PM, January 26, 2004: -$50 Full Packet submitted by 11:59 PM, February 16, 2004: -$30 Half Packet submitted by 11:59 PM, January 26, 2004: -$25* Half Packet submitted by 11:59 PM, February 16, 2004: -$15 (Note: if a team submits a half packet by the first deadline, they can submit a second half packet by the 2/16 deadline to receive a total discount of $40) Working Buzzer System: -$5 each (maximum of 2) Approved Moderator Provided: -$15 Minimum Fee: $30 PACKET DISTRIBUTION (24/24 total): Literature 5/5 Science 5/5 History 4/4 Religion/Mythology/Philosophy 2/2 Music 1/1 Visual Arts 1/1 Social Science 1/1 Geography 1/1 Social Science or Geography 1/1 Pop Culture 1/1 Sports 1/1 Pop Culture or Sports 1/1 HALF-PACKET DISTRIBUTION (12/12) 2/2 Literature 2/2 Science 1/1 Literature or Science 2/2 History 1/1 Philosophy/Religion/Mythology 1/1 Music or Visual Arts 1/1 Social Science or Geography 1/1 Pop Culture or Sports 1/1 Social Science or Geography or Pop Culture or Sports PACKET SUBMISSION: All packets should be submitted to the editor, Charles Meigs, at quizbowl at ucla dot edu. PACKET TRADE: We are looking for tournaments to trade questions with, so if there's a tournament on a similar date that wants to trade with Aztlán Cup, send me an e-mail. FREELANCE PACKETS: You will be rewarded either with questions from the tournament or a packet submitted by UCLA to the tournament of their choice, and hopefully a slight cessation in posts cluttering this board about the decay of the West Coast quizbowl circuit. LOGISTICS: Tournament matches will take place in Bunche Hall, the location for other UCLA tournaments, such as ACF Fall 2002, TWAIN 2003, and NAQT ICT 2003. REGISTRATION: Let me know how many teams your club is sending and how many packets you expect to submit. All registration should be done through quizbowl at ucla dot edu. WEBSITE: There actually is a website up for this tournament. It can be found at www.bol.ucla.edu/~quizbowl/aztlan.htm. It will be regularly updated as the tournament gets closer.
