I'm not sure what this means, but when I try to pitch the game of
Quiz Bowl to new students, this is what I tell them:
The Purpose of Quiz Bowl is...
...to test how much you remember from your education.
...to acquire new knowledde you might not have learnt in your
education.
...to become a more well-rounded person. If you have knowledge in
many different subject areas, then you can be a better problem
solver.
...to learn quick recall and memory skills; how to "think on your
feet."
...to enjoy fun and fellowship with other intelligent people.
...to test your abilities in a eustress-oriented situation.
...to crush your opponent, drive him before you, and hear the
lamentation of his women.
So, flamewars don't really make my list when I'm trying to get
people interested in the game. I'd have to agree that is a negative
aspect of the game.
