I'm not sure when Berkeley became the budgetary standard of West Coast quizbowl. The sad truth is that we get very little money for a club our size and our trips to ACF and NAQT this year were paid for essentially out of pocket by the club members. Also, the reason that UCLA (and most other California teams) have been able to attend up to 10 tournaments this year is due to an unexpected but welcome expansion in the California circuit, as well as due to established tournaments like WIT, ACF Fall, Technophobia, and Cardinal Classic, just to name a few. Chris mentioned Princeton having to do without $4000 worth of fees gathered from a high-school tournament, but even under ideal conditions, Berkeley could never pull in that much money. The high- school circuit just isn't there to support the collegiate teams, so traveling out of state for quizbowl purposes is hard for us. Jerry
