Hi, everybody: This is your official invitation to UCI Open V An open/masters QB event! Who: Anybody who wants to play quiz bowl What: An open/masters tournament When: Saturday June 26, 2004, 8:00 AM – 3:00 PM Where: UC Irvine Campus (Rooms TBA) After one year of hiatus, I am reviving the tradition of UCI Open. This is a packet-submission tournament with significant discounts for well-written packets submitted early. It also kicks off the summer season for the California quiz-bowl circuit. Packet Distribution Each submitted packet consists of 27 tossups and 27 bonuses: 5 Science 5 History 5 Literature 3 Social Sciences 3 Fine Arts 2 Religion/Mythology/Philosophy 1 Geography 1 Business/Politics/Current Events 1 General Knowledge 1 Trash Please use good judgment in distributing subject areas within one category (e.g., please don't write 5 tossups on modern Irish literature). I prefer ACF-style questions. Question Security Each submitted packet should be blind to the other teams coming from the same school/organization. Questions should be written exclusively for this tournament. Please try to write questions that haven't been heard in recent tournaments. Packets are to be submitted to me, Willie Chen, at williechen7_at_.... Question Difficulty Although this is an open/masters tournament, please do not go overboard on question difficulty. I would suggest a bell-curve model of difficulty distribution; in other words, 80% of the questions are medium (near NAQT Sectionals), 10% are difficult (near ACF Nationals), and 10% are easy (near ACF Fall). Tossups should be 5-6 lines long. All bonuses are 30 points. Theme packets, of course, are highly encouraged. A Word on Submitting the Packet As the Tournament Director/Central Editor, I reserve the right to preview the packet before accepting it. If I feel that too much editing is necessary, I will simply return the packet to sender. I would suggest that each team submit its packet as soon as possible to avoid late fees. The absolute deadline for packet submission is noon, June 18, 2004. Entry Fees The base fee for this tournament is $90 per team. Discounts: -$10 for each second, third, or fourth team from the same school/organization -$5 for each functional buzzer system (two max) -$40 for each experienced, competent, full-time moderator (one max) -$50 for an acceptable packet submitted by noon, May 28, 2004 -$30 for an acceptable packet submitted by noon, June 4, 2004 -$10 for an acceptable packet submitted by noon, June 11, 2004 +$10 for an acceptable packet submitted by noon, June 18, 2004 Please note that the packet deadlines are on Fridays in lieu of Saturdays. The minimum fee for one team is $40. Please make a check out to College Bowl Club. Field Limitations Due to limited moderator availability, I will cap the tournament at either 9 or 11 teams. We also ask that all teams arrive on time at 8:00 AM because we absolutely have to finish the tournament by 3:30 PM at the latest. We will not be able to keep individual statistics during the tournament; however, we will do that within one week after the tournament. Awards and Prizes In addition to the top three finishing teams, there will be ample awards given at the conclusion of this tournament. Some categories include: Best Packet Best Tossup Question Best Bonus Question Best Theme Packet Best Team Name Best Correct Answer Best Wrong Answer Best Sportsmanship To register your team or air any questions, please e-mail me at williechen7_at_.... Best of luck to all teams! Sincerely, Willie Chen Tournament Director, UCI Open V
