I plan on spending quite a bit of time next year doing a documentary on everything quiz bowl. I would like to follow a few teams throughout the year (come film question writing, practice, tournaments, late night question reading at Denny's and the like), interviewing team members and just kind of being a fly on the wall, trying to capture the subculture that is quiz bowl. My vision is to have the documentary look forward to the national tournaments like acf, trash and quite a bit on naqt. As time and money permit, I would like to follow perhaps a few levels of teams - teams that have a legit chance of winning naqt nats - teams that are up and coming - teams that are just starting out - teams that have strong trash skills If teams are very good at both quiz bowl and trash all the better. I plan to start filming in the fall, It has been a few years since I competed and I likely don't know too many people still on the circuit these days. I competed for several years for byu, am rather a tall fellow, ran a few years of perpetual motion tournaments at byu, now work as a principle engineer and have hopes of making great documentaries. I am hoping to be rather unobstrusive in my filming. I hope to start filming in the fall, but if there are teams or tournaments this summer that are willing to participate I will start sooner. Willing as a team means letting me come film some practices, film an outside interview or two, maybe walking me through some question writing, and letting me film you at tournaments. Willing as a tournament means allowing me to film games, and perhaps filming some behind the scenes tournament action. I think quiz bowl has a fascinating subculture, with oh so many interesting and brilliant people, that must have interesting stories to tell. I guess I am looking for teams and tournaments that would be willing to let me into their lives a bit. Since this will likely be all self-funded, floors to crash on and perhaps rides from and to the airport may also be appreciated. Guess I am envisioning hoop dreams meets spellbound meet espn's the season. My goal is to make something good enough to get shown at sundance and other like festivals. Also, if you're interested in helping with actually making the documentary, please let me know. Lighting and sound help would be much appreciated Right now I am thinking strcitly college, but if there are interested high school teams in say the provo/orem area, I would reconsider. Working title for the project is Quiz Bowl Smart. I currently have a Canon GL1 and plan on purchasing a Panasonic AG-DVX100A to help with the project. Thanks Earl
