If you're counting the other side of the pond, the oldest contestant I know
of in Britain was 72-year-old former pharmacist Ida Staples. She represented
the Open University on University Challenge in the 1996-97 series, scoring
two huge scores along the way before losing in the final.

Off-screen, we've had several retired players in our open tournaments, but I
don't tend to stop people to ask ages, so I couldn't say accurately how old
the oldest player was.
