UTC is working on plans for one or more open tournament weekends in Chattanooga this summer. We would like your input before we make our plans final. TIMING: As we have for the past 2 years, we are looking at hosting one weekend in June and another in August. To avoid conflict with the Riverbend Festival, we are looking at the weekend of June 25-26, as well as the weekend of Aug. 6-7. If you know of any reason these would be bad weekends, please let me know. TOURNAMENT TYPES: We are again planning to host a delayed mirror of NAQT's High School NCT as one of our events in June. In the past we've paired that with a packet submission trash tournament, Summer Camp. Then in August, we've held both a packet submission academic tournament, Moc Masters, and another packet submission trash tournament, Muck Masters. This year UTC's David Moore and John Kilby have offered an an alternate proposal for one event, a quizbowl biathlon. This would not exactly be a hybrid tournament, in the sense of rounds mixing academic and trash. This would be concurrent academic and trash tournaments, using the same rooms and the same teams (one substitution allowed per team between matches, so you could bring one academic specialist and one trash wizard.) Prizes and recognition would go to the top teams and performers in each format, but there'd be a grand championship for the best combined record. Assuming you have an interest in attending our summer events, we'd like to know: Would you be more or less likely to participate in such an event? If so, would you prefer the biathlon to be a one-day or two-day event? Do you suggest any other variant format or content? Are there other tournament types (e.g., a singles event) you'd prefer to see? DURATION: How many rounds is too few, and how many is too many? And does it make a difference on that question whether we're talking about Saturday or Sunday? (And assuming Saturday's is the longer event, would you rather have academic on Sat. & trash on Sun., or vice versa?) Please pass along your thoughts on these issues (steinhic [at] bellsouth [dot] net), and we'll see how close we can get to making everyone happy. Thanks.
