Apologies both for the inevitable cross-posting, and for the fact that I inexplicably failed to post the details earlier... MIX MASTERS/MUCK MASTERS/MOC MASTERS The UTC Academic Trivia Association is hosting a double-tournament quizbowl weekend in August. Each tournament will stand as a separate tournament, and teams may choose to attend only one or the other. But we're also treating them jointly as a quizbowl biathlon... On Sat., Aug. 6, we will hold Muck Masters, an open trash tournament. In a change from past Muck Masters, there is NO PACKET SUBMISSION. This will be a house-written tournament, with John Kilby and David Moore as principal authors. For Muck Masters, registration begins at *9:30* AM EDT, with announcements at 9:50 and tournament start time set for 10 AM. On Sun., Aug. 7, we will hold Moc Masters, an open academic tournament on a packet submission basis. Details on packet requirements are below. For Muck Masters, registration begins at *8:30* AM EDT, with announcements at 8:50 and tournament start time set for 9 AM. We're also treating results from the two tournaments together as a separate competition, Mix Masters. There will also be an overall title and prizes for the best combined finish for teams that compete in both tournaments. We will allow a team to change one of their players from one day to the next and still be eligible for the Mix Masters title. (UTC will be allowed an additional exemption so both John and David may compete in Moc Masters.) Both tournaments are open to players of any level, with four players per team. For both tournaments, meet in Holt 124 on the UTC campus. Fees are as follows: MUCK MASTERS: Base fee $90 MOC MASTERS: Base fee $90; assumes a full academic packet (see below) is submitted by Sun., July 24. DISCOUNTS (available for each tournament unless otherwise specified): -$20 off the combined total if team is competing in both tournaments -$10 for a full-time official -$5 for a buzzer -$15 for a round of original high school questions for use in our Oct. 1 tournament, received by Aug. 6 -$15 for a blind academic round for Moc Masters, if you're competing in Muck Masters only PENALTIES: +$10 if Moc Masters packet is received after 7/24 but no later than Thurs. 7/28 +$20 if Moc Masters packet is received after 7/28 but no later than Mon. 8/1 +$30 for no Moc Masters packet if arranged sufficiently in advance +$40 for no Moc Masters packet without timely notification PACKET SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS FOR MOC MASTERS: First of all, *questions also must be original for this tournament*, and *questions must be blind to all other teams, including any other teams from your school.* In RARE cases we can make exceptions, but ONLY if you check with me first. It's not mandatory, but it'll make life easier on me if you can e- mail the packet as either an MS Word or RTF file, if the essential parts of the answer are in bold, and if you insert the word "Answer:" before each answer. This is a Masters tournament, but we still expect teams with widely varied levels of experience, so we are NOT looking for ultra-hard questions. We prefer a degree of difficulty considered easy to moderate by current invitational standards. While not beginning with giveaway clues, most tossups should be answerable by most teams by the end of the question. Bonuses should be such that a novice team stands a good chance of getting at least 10 pts., a good team 20, and the best teams all 30 pts. DISTRIBUTION: For a full packet, we ask for 25 tossups and 25 bonuses per packet, distributed as follows below. For a half packet, we ask for 13 tossups and 12 bonuses, distributed across the same categories: Literature 5 for full packet, 2-3 for half packet Recommended for full packet: at least 2 20th century, at least 2 pre- 20th century; at least 2 U.S./Canadian, at least 2 non-U.S./Canadian Sciences 5 for full packet, 2-3 for half packet Required for full packet: at least 1 each of biology, physics, and chemistry History 5 for full packet, 2-3 for half packet Recommended for full packet: at least 2 20th century, at least 2 pre- 20th century; at least 2 U.S./Canadian, at least 2 non-U.S./Canadian The remainder should contain at least 1 each and no more than 3 of: Philosophy/religion/myth Fine arts Social sciences incl. geography Popular culture General knowledge/interdisciplinary questions are OK but purely optional. STYLE: Tossups -- average length 3 sentences. We want questions that begin with lesser-known details and gradually get easier. And please don't violate the pronoun rule -- e.g.,, if your first pronoun is "He..." the answer should be a person, not a title. Bonuses -- all bonuses worth a possible 30 pts.; no single-part all- or-nothing bonuses. We don't want 6-part boni unless they're very, very short, and even then use sparingly. Also use the 30-20-10 format sparingly. PACKET GUIDELINES FOR BLIND HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDS: Same as above, except that the 25/25 should include 1/1 geography and 1/1 math/computer science. Oh, and they should be much easier -- like you didn't already know that. LODGINGS: We don't have a block reserved, but the Clarion (423-765-5150) has a standing offer for discounted rooms at $66/night when available if you mention you're with the UTC quizbowl tournament. DIRECTIONS: >From Atlanta and points south -- take I-75 to Chattanooga, then I-24 west towards downtown, then follow the freeway splitoff for U.S. 27 North, downtown Chattanooga. From 27 North take the 4th Street exit, within sight of the Tennessee Aquarium. Go right on 4th St. (you have no choice) and follow it for ca. 1 mile. Go past the UTC Arena, after which E. 4th St. becomes part of E. 3rd St. After that, take the second right on Palmetto St. Go two blocks and turn right on Vine St. (just past the EMCS Building.) Just before the place where Vine St. is blocked off, the parking lot for Holt is on the right. * From Knoxville and points north -- take I-75 to Chattanooga, then I- 24 West; directions from there same as above. * From Nashville and points west/north: Take I-24 east to Chattanooga. As you round Moccasin Bend (freeway goes alongside river) watch for two exit lanes on the right; take the less rightward of the two, which will have signs above it for U.S. 27 N. Rest of directions are the same as above. * From Birmingham and points southwest: Take I-59 to the outskirts of Chattanooga, where it dead-ends into I-24. Get on I-24 East and follow the Nashville directions from there. TOURNAMENT DIRECTOR: To the surprise of no one, it's Charlie Steinhice (steinhic at bellsouth dot net.)
