As the TD whose tournament was bumped by Cancel Bowl, I want to make a couple points. First, I'm totally uninterested in contributing to the academic vs. trash issue. I don't think that's the point at stake, at least for me. I'll freely admit to playing only academic tournaments anyway, so factors attendant to trash events are not really my concern. I'll freely admit that it was a bad oversight on my part not to announce the event on the Yahoo! group. However, the hsquizbowl forums probably draw more people than the Yahoo! board does at this point, and that's something most qbers know. It's a popular board and a lot of things get announced there, so just because it's not up here doesn't mean it doesn't exist. This board can no longer be said to be the complete clearinghouse for all things quizbowl. I don't think that Mark was being malicious, but when he didn't move his tournament, what was I supposed to do? I don't see what I should have done other than to move my own event, but that doesn't make me less annoyed with the situation. I have reason to believe that had we been able to run BUTT on Saturday, we would have gotten 3 more teams, which, money aside, would have provided a more varied field for the players. The fact that this tournament was ostensibly packet submission and that it was (initially) tied to the travel schedules of several people as well as the various spring breaks that are happening right now makes it all the more difficult to move. Another factor was trying to get the tournament in before the various nationals so teams could have some practice on academic questions. I think that the conflict with Cancel Bowl was unfortunate and I won't deny that my oversight was partly responsible, but we did claim the date first, and you can't just come along and displace a tournament like that. In conclusion, please post and check on both boards when planning events, and don't occupy other peoples' tournament dates. Jerry
