Congratulations to Georgia Tech alums (Jim Dendy and Stephen Webb), winners of UTC's open mirror of the NAQT High School National Championship. Tech defeated South Florida (Ahmad Ragab and Rob Fernandez) in the final round to claim the title. UT alums (Carol Guthrie, Bronson Messer, and Scotti Whitmire) tied USF for second place. The top teams in descending order got their choice of reference books, each giving brief historical/cultural timelines of a particular nation or culture (bought at retail, even!) A great time was had by all. Thanks go first and foremost to NAQT for allowing us to piggyback off all their efforts and host this tournament. Thanks also to Anthony Bush, Aaron Layton, and Dren Rollins for joining me as house readers, and to Ruth Jackson for helping with stats and logistics between rounds while actually playing. We held a full nine-team round robin, after which the field was split into upper and lower divisions for a second round robin. Cerebral FLatulence (Bevill State etc.) defeated Gnarls Steinhice (UTC) in a shootout to claim the fifth and final spot in the upper division, which explains the order of finish below: Team Name Win-Loss Points Opp Pts Diff/GM Georgia Tech alums 10 - 2 3405 2280 93.75 South Florida 9 - 3 5050 1645 283.75 UT Alums 9 - 3 3625 2285 111.67 Came here from the future, ugly sucker. Seth Kendall edged out Ahmad Ragab for the top spot despite Ahmad's impressive average of over 4 power tossups per round. The #3 scorer, Jim Dendy of the Georgia Tech alums, was also recognized as the winner of the John Drennen Wiley Rollins Award for Outstanding Achievement in Buzzer Aggression (most negs.) Unitarian Jihad's Scott Farley provided the Most Gloriously Wrong Answer by answering "Freddy Got Fingered" when the correct answer was "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory." [I had to speculate whether that meant Freddie *Highmore* got fingered...] Full individual stats were as follows: Player Team 15 10 -5 Points Rounds PPG Seth Kendall ficus 34 80 9 1265 12 105.42 Ahmad Ragab USF 50 53 7 1245 12 103.75 Jim Dendy GT 15 57 15 720 12 60.00 Carol Guthrie UTA 14 51 12 660 12 55.00 Rob Fernandez USF 13 45 3 630 12 52.50 Jim Cook CF 12 39 2 560 12 46.67 Stephen Webb GT 9 43 6 535 12 44.58 Harry Nelson MCA 6 49 9 535 13 41.15 Scott Farley UJ 9 40 6 505 13 38.85 Bronson Messer UTA 8 38 8 460 12 38.33 Jacob Vannucci Gnarls 4 33 6 360 11 32.73 Stephen Wise COFTI 5 37 7 410 13 31.54 Jim Sanford CF 2 29 1 315 12 26.25 John Kilby Gnarls 7 17 4 255 12 21.25 Glenn Allen Bobo CF 4 20 8 220 12 18.33 Trevor Locke Gnarls 2 21 4 220 12 18.33 Ruth Jackson Gnarls 2 14 1 165 11 15.00 Phil VesBeke COFTI 4 14 1 195 13 15.00 Scotti Whitmire UTA 4 13 3 175 12 14.58 Drew Wilkerson MCA 2 9 1 115 12 9.58 Taylor Clark MCA 2 9 2 110 12 9.17 Nathan Rhodes MCA 0 10 5 75 13 5.77 Ben Urick COFTI 2 4 2 60 13 4.62 Hallie Lipsey UJ 0 7 4 50 13 3.85 Ben Young COFTI 0 5 2 40 13 3.08 Sarah Veal UJ 0 4 1 35 13 2.69 Ginny Agee UJ 0 1 0 10 7 1.43 Jerad Vannucci Gnarls 0 0 0 0 3 0.00
