I know I haven't sent an advertisement for this out to this group, so I apologize for being late. The Partnership for Academic Competition Excellence is hosting a FREE discussion/workshop for writers and readers of quiz bowl academic competitions. Date: July 14-15, 2007 Location: Gonzaga High School, Eye/I Street, DC Cost: I say it again, FREE! We will establish a workshop agenda based on feedback over the past few months about the challenges of question-writing, editing, and reading questions. The tangible goal is to produce a set of practice questions targetting orientation programs for entry-level students joining college quiz bowl programs and high school teams who want to participate in pyramidal-style quiz bowl events. Participants in this workshop will get this set of questions for free, while others may purchase the set for a modest cost. The cost will be used to support the curricular development of the Bootcamp. The intended benefits: * Establish a community of writers and editors; * Establish a general set of "ground rules" about writing college- style (PACE, ACF or NAQT and their modifications) packets; * Identify tools and reliable sources (other than Wikipedia) from which one can write questions or resolve protests; * Develop and appreciate the difficulties of reading questions from the perspective of novice and experienced readers; * Discuss philosophies for writing questions at the high school and college level that promote recruitment, participation, and retention. The first day will feature brief discussions and assignment of writing teams. The second day, we anticipate play-testing questions and discussing the raw material in a confidential discussion. Any "repeats" are actually welcome to discuss comparisons in research and writing style. By July 6: fill out the registration form at http://survey.ssg.gmu.edu/survey/viewResults.jsp?id=1179715052025 , especially the last question as it will dictate the agenda we wish to pursue. Anyone who is planning to attend (participant or discussant/faculty) should fill out this form. We will begin considering topics for discussion for all replies around July 1 to 4, so please register early. The registration site will shut down on July 7 or thereabouts. We welcome any interested "advanced" high school players, college players at any level, advisors, and tournament organizers to attend. We welcome a diverse group of participants, and we hope to see you here in two weeks!
