Apart from the issue of whether NAQT should host a mailing list, I think we should take this opportunity to consider what kind of communication medium we want. There are a multitude of messaging systems on the Internet, and each of them do some things better than others. Mailing lists are good if you don't want to go to any extra trouble to check a discussion, but they can clog your mailbox, esp. if you're on vacation. The Y! club is a great total package, but the message system is a little crude, even by browser-based standards. Personally, I've missed threded discussions ever since a.c.c-b died. Threads are a great way to organize thematic discussions, of which we have many. People who don't want to read certain threads can ignore them more easily, and it's easier to catch up on a discussion, or find a message that was posted earlier. Most mailers don't support threads (mine doesn't), and Y! Clubs doesn't support threads. I'd like to see a threaded messaging solution considered. There are several software packages that implement threaded message boards over the web; some of them can mirror the web-based discussion on a newsgroup, so people have options on how they read and post to the discussions. I suspect there are also other "community" sites with threaded message boards -- any suggestions? There is some urgency to getting a mailing list up for announcements, but with the Y! club, we're not cut off. I think we should consider our options before we go back to "You have 120 messages in your inbox" after a busy weekend. phil
