Class B -- Champions: Detroit Country Day Runners-up: Haslett 3rd place: Center Line 4th place: Trenton 5th place: Bloomfield Hills Andover / Tecumseh 7th place: Grand Rapids West Catholic / Cranbrook Kingswood I didn't get to watch many class B games this weekend. I do know that DCD ran the table, beating Haslett in the winner's bracket "final" 500-420, and then again in the championship game 495-230. Country Day's closest call in the tournament came in the winner's bracket 2nd round game on Friday against unlucky Manistee--Manistee lost their opener to Country Day 455-450, and then after a 350-250 victory over Newaygo, lost another close game in the loser's bracket rather early on Saturday to eventual 3rd place Center Line (420-390). C-Line went on to win five consecutive games before bowing out to Haslett 385-205. With this victory, Detroit Country Day has won five consecutive Class B state championships. DCD also won the Class C/D title in 1993. Haslett made it to the finals for the first time since winning consecutive Class B championships in 1993 and 1994. The only other two schools to have won the Class B crown are North Branch (1992 & 1995) and Hartland (1991). Class C/D -- Champions: Kent City Runners-up: Breckenridge 3rd place: Hancock 4th place: Grand Rapids City High 5th place: Ishpeming Westwood / St. Louis 7th place: Houghton / Muskegon Oakridge Breckenridge beat Kent City in the winner's bracket semi-finals (HELP!!--I just realized that this is the one game out of 160 or so out of the three brackets for which I neglected to get down the final score, if any of you on the list have the result I would greatly appreciate it), and then lost two consecutive games to Kent City in the championship rounds, both nailbiters--490-460 and 470-460 (kind of reminiscent of the extreme nail-chewing going on in the 1998 Class B championship contests between Andover and Country Day.) Kent City's first place finish breaks a four year string of Upper Peninsula dominance of the Class C/D crown, with Hancock having prevailed in 1999, and with Houghton's victories in 1996, 1997, and 1998. My own (and many others') heartfelt congratulations, as always, go out to all of the teams participating in the State Championships. It's always rewarding to witness and interact with the ever-rich panorama of personalities and perspectives on display at such a melting pot as this. mak
