Albert, I would ask you to please watch carefully when you decide to make sweeping generalizations such as the ones in your previous post. To characterize all parents as simply living through their children is a ludicrous statement, and then to go so far as to compare them to the Ramseys takes the stupidity to a brand new level. Furthermore, while I agree that a lot of the Spelling Bee is getting by on rote memorization, the same doesn't apply at least at the National level. Rote memorizing will get you by for all of two rounds. Many of the words in the later rounds are words I couldn't spell off the top of my head, yet they can. That is an achievement they should be proud of. Furthermore, how is the spelling bee not unlike High School academic competition in its drive to push children for the gain of the parent or school rather than the student's (see Meek, Dorothy, a notorious practitioner of such)? Bottom line, there's no group that's "all like that", and parents least of all. Andy Goss who (a) has *made* the National Spelling Bee, and (b) has a father who (1) is supportive of his every decision and wouldn't dream of living through him in a million years and (2) is quite possibly one of the most upstanding citizens this country has, thank you very much! PS -- Sorry if my tone offends. Both the spelling bee and parents are very close to me.
