"A quick note from someone who competed in
geography bees: I did it because I loved it. I didn't
memorize a damn thing; I studied maps and atlases from the
time I could read (three years old) because they
fascinated me.

I am on agreement
with Kirstin on this one. I studied maps from the time
I was little (I have a box of 50 of them in my
closet). In my school though, we had the geography bee as
a team competition, and my team (I answered EVERY
single question for them) lost by one question to
another class, who's teacher had pulled them out of class
every day for a month to memorize things.
