SECOND ANNUAL VANCOUVER ESTIVAL TRIVIA OPEN SATURDAY, JULY 22, 2000 The Vancouver Estival Trivia Open (VETO) is the nation's longest-running annual quiz bowl tournament. Watch the web page http://caql.org/events/veto00.html for updates. In most respects, VETO 2000 will be similar to VETO 1999 (check the web page http://caql.org/results/veto99.html for a report including a nice photo). It will use donated questions, this time by NAQT, with Canadian content added by the participants. WHEN: Saturday, July 22, 2000, probably starting late in the morning and ending late in the afternoon. This is the 60th birthday of the legendary Canadian trivia game-show host Alex Trebek. It is also the 50th anniversary of the death of William Lyon Mackenzie King. May his spirit be with us. In order to allow enough time to arrange teams and packets, please notify us by July 1, 2000, if you would like to participate. WHERE: Vancouver, B.C., Canada, or a nearby suburb. Exact location to be determined, depending on the number of players and their preferences. We'd like to hold this outdoors, weather permitting. By road, Vancouver is about 3 hours from Seattle, 6 hours from Portland, 12 hours from Calgary, 17 hours from San Francisco, and 50 hours from State College, Pennsylvania. Vancouver International Airport is served by more than 40 air carriers offering direct flights from 33 cities in North America, 12 cities in Asia/Pacific, and 3 cities in Europe. WHO: We welcome participation from anyone who has not heard or seen questions from NAQT's Invitational Series #20. These were used in some U.S. tournaments after February, 2000. If you don't have a full team of four, we can match you up with other players. The tournament director is Peter McCorquodale, petermc_at_... FORMAT: VETO 2000 will be run without central editing and will be staffed by players. Last year we had four teams, which seemed to be the ideal field size because it required only one play area and one buzzer system. In each round there were two teams playing, one staffing, and one spectating. This format will be reconsidered if the amount of interest requires more than four teams. Most teams will be responsible for bringing two or three packets (see Question Packets and Canadian Content below) and reading them to the other teams. We'll likely play a double round-robin. Games will be conducted according to NAQT rules, except that matches will be untimed, with a fixed number of tossups per round. TRANS-CANADA CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH: The winning team at VETO will play in a championship match against the winning team from a tournament to be held in Ontario the same weekend. Watch the QB-CANADA egroup at http://www.egroups.com/messages/qb-canada/ for an announcement of this other tournament. The Trans-Canada championship match will be made feasible using a device that was invented in Canada in the last century and is in widespread use in this country today, but has never been used by most people living outside of Canada.
