[This is a *very* tentative announcement - the details of this are still being worked on!] Oxford University Quiz Society is proud to announce its first invitational tournament, to be held on 18th November 2000 at St John's College, Oxford (UK). Play will start at 10:30 am GMT, and finish about 7:00 pm, with a minimum of either 9 x 25-minute games or 12 x 20-minute games, followed by a single-match final. Rules will be NAQT-style, modified to British conventions. Questions will be reasonably international, with a slight slant towards Britishness - it is *not* a submission tournament. The projected base fee for the competition play only is around 25 ($35-$40), with small deductions for buzzers, moderators, etc. It is intended that the competition should be for less experienced players, though this is being left largely to the discretion of the teams. Generally, anyone who has up to about a year of college quizbowl experience is ok (i.e. players that are new this academic year, or new next academic year). I suppose we'd take any High School teams feeling stupidly brave as well! As this is an early announcement, I'm most interested in hearing from any teams who were not at either of the last 2 British Championships (i.e. new UK teams, or non-UK teams) who might be interested in sending a team or teams (the field will be capped at somewhere between 20 and 30 teams, so too many multiple entries may not be allowed). Limited accommodation may be available near the time, otherwise moderately cheap hotels nearby can be recommended. Oxford is 1.5 hours from London Heathrow by coach. Also, I'd like to hear from anyone who has experience of being in charge of tournaments of this scale for some advice on organisation (I've written and organised a 32-teamer before, but over 3 weeks within Oxford, which is a bit different). All communication to quiz_at_... please. Thanks, Rob Linham, Oxford University Quiz Society (ex-President, eternal TD, general dogsbody)
