"Ignoring the erroneous assumption that the sole goal of the tournament is to win games, does this system have any inherent unfairnesses in it that we didn't spot? Edmund" It is unfair to ignore the assumption of the goal is to win games. If you are you are going to rank teams, the number 1 consideration should be win-loss record. If there is a tie in the standing, then head-to-head should be used. The team that won should be the one to advance (or whatever the case may be). It does not matter if Team A averages 250 points to Team B's 195 points, as long as Team B pulls out the victory. In sports, the only league that uses point differental is the NFL, and that is AFTER overall record, head-to-head competition, and record within the conference, and the record with the league. In CP's case, I really hope "Being John Holmes" had beaten "Faber College" (I do not know the results of their game). I know I would have been really upset if my team missed the playoffs to a team with the same record as us, whom we beat, but averaged less points than (actually, the team above mine in the standings had the same record as us and we beat them, but I am not going to complain about that because there is no differences in 5th or 6th place).
