The University of California at Berkeley Quiz Bowl Club held it's 8th annual Western Invitational tournament: A Tournament without an Usher, in dedication to recently departed (from CAL) Mike Usher, this past Saturday. The tournament begun as a full round robin and then split into an upper bracket of 4 and a lower bracket of 3 based on head to head competition. There was a small circle of death between Stanford C, Berkeley A and Caltech B after the round robin as the records were identical, but Berkeley A and Caltech B both defeated Stanford C in the round robin and thus they made it into the top bracket along with Stanford A and Caltech A. So the results were as follows CalTech A 8-1 (2-1 in bracket play) 2915-1045 +207.8 Stanford A 7-2 (3-0 in bracket play) 2175-1470 +78.3 CalTech B 4-5 (1-2 in bracket play) 1175-1875 -77.8 Berkeley A 3-6 (0-3 in bracket play) 1320-1705 -42.8 ----------- Stanford C 5-3 (2-0 in bracket play) 1760-1225 +66.9 Stanford B 3-5 (1-1 in bracket play (1210-1170) -70.0 Berkeley B 0-8 (0-2 in bracket play) 545-2010 -183.1 Congratulations to the team of CalTech A (Richard Mason, Maribeth Swiatek, Chris Nolte and Jay Catherwood) for taking the tournament. They took home more or less randomly chosen books at Cody's bookstore on Telegraph Avenue. The individual stats are as follows: Player Team Games TU Int Points PPG Matt Bruce StanB 8 42 8 380 47.5 Richard TechA 9 48 13 9 415 46.1 Tim StanC 8 37 10 320 40 Vinita StanC 8 34 4 320 40 Prasun StanA 9 32 1 320 35.6 Jordan StanA 9 33 6 300 33.3 Maribeth TechA 9 29 12 230 25.6 Matt Levine BerkA 9 19 1 185 20.6 Steve BerkA 9 22 7 185 20.6 Chris TechA 8 17 5 145 18.1 Elliot StanA 9 17 3 155 17.2 Pierre BerkB 8 15 5 125 15.6 Jordan TechB 9 17 6 140 15.6 Priya BerkA 9 17 8 130 14.4 Matt TechB 9 13 0 130 14.4 Jay TechA 9 13 0 130 14.4 Kevin TechB 9 15 8 110 12.2 Justin BerkB 8 11 3 95 11.9 Caleb TechB 9 9 3 75 8.3 Mark StanB 8 8 3 65 8.1 Scott StanA 9 7 0 70 7.8 Jerry BerkA 9 12 11 65 7.2 Sal BerkB 8 5 0 50 6.3 Rudy StanB 8 7 5 45 5.6 Orko BerkB 8 0 1 0 0 Richard Mason led the way with interrupts with 13 and thus took home "Cuss Control" a book on how to control one's swearing. Generously donated by Jon Pennington. Matthew Bruce who unexpectedly showed up at the last minute to join Stanford B led the way with highest PPG but acquiesced his price to the students. Richard being the number 2 scorer refused a prize as well. Thus the remaining three prizes went to Tim from Stanford C, Vinita from Stanford C and Prasun from Stanford A who I'm sure is enjoying his book of Abraham Lincoln quips. It should be noted that Stanford C, comprising of Vinita and Tim (I'm sorry I don't know your last names) did extremely well for a team of 2 freshmen, both finishing in the top 5 for scoring. These two players can only continue to get better and will soon be a West Coast force. Though they ended in the bottom bracket, they did beat Stanford A and gave CalTech A a scare. Congratulations to the both of you. I'd like to formostly thank Cornell U and Anwar Kashem for swapping packets with me at 2am, it was so helpful and I am very appreciative. I'd also like to thank my staff, Eok for doing stats and editing, Jon for providing his awesome theme packet and helping to edit with me until about 7am yesterday morning. Thanks to Juliana for buying the juice, Seth and Selene for helping to moderate, Casey for the use of his laptop for stats, and Nick for helping edit the previous night. Thanks again to CalTech and Stanford for bringing your retinues and I'm sure we'll see you guys down at Technophobia/Trash Regionals in a few weeks. That'll do it, we hope to see you all again at CAL for WIT IX and we appreciate everyone's time and effort. I think we all had fun. Ross Steven Ritterman
