All hail your conscience. I will surely sleep better at night knowing how wonderful you are. Seriously, it takes a very special post (a very special poster?) to combine that level of self-adulation with that level of sanctimony. Refusing to take credit for tossups you didn't really answer is noble, but arguably the correct thing to do -- and, for that very reason, hardly anything new. Some of the best players do it all the time. (Not me, I can't remember ever getting credit for something I knew was wrong.) By contrast to the case of quiz-bowl knowledge, we have no idea what really happened in Florida. There's been a lot of speculation, but that's all it is. Asking George Bush to find a way to concede is no more reasonable than asking Al Gore to concede once the recount fails to put him over the top. In fact, if anything, it's far easier to call on Gore to take the high road. For one thing, it's trivial for him to let the result stand -- just don't do anything. Bush, on the other hand, what exactly is it that you want him to do? Deny the votes (and the voters) that went his way? Tell the election board, "no, surely you're wrong. Give my opponent these votes because I told you to." That's not how it works. The election board is making a good-faith effort to certify the results it has. All we can ask is that BOTH candidates get out of the way and let them do their thing. A simple recount is fine, in fact I'd really like to see it happen in IA, WI and/or NM. The rest is just pointless litigation. At most one of the two major-party candidates seems willing to bring a nation together rather than fighting for his -- and only his -- own interests and interest groups. (Maybe neither of them can be described that way, but if Gore wants to lawyer his way into the White House, I really can't respect that.) Matt
