Bear with me here. No matter what I say, since this tournament counts for pretty much nothing in the grand scheme of things, I'll let the results stand. However, if I'm wrong, and these *do* matter, this is for NAQT's benefit as well. The following was reported when the Mid-Atlantic standings were published: "Winners were determined first by overall record, then we looked at individual games for ties, but our circles of death were very messy, so we just did it by PPG." The following is not just for Virginia's benefit and is not meant to degrade them. They are allowed to settle the standings however they please; it's their tournament. This is more for the benefit of TDs in the future. Consider it a tutorial. Here were the standings in Division I: 1. Penn State (13-0) 2. Pittsburgh (9-4) 3. Maryland (8-5) 4. Virginia (7-6) 5. George Washington (7-6) ----- 6. Virginia Tech A (7-6) 7. Duke (7-6) 8. Johns Hopkins A (4-9)* 9. Johns Hopkins B (3-10) 10. Virginia Tech B (0-13) * - JHU A was reported first as 4-7, then as 6-7. However, assuming one of 4 and 7 is correct, my arithmetic indicates that they should be 4-9. Since a 9 looks more like a 7 than a 4 does a 6, this is what I believe; however, only Hopkins knows for sure, and if they won 6 games, I apologize. Either way, it's irrelevant. The four-way tie was resolved by PPG and came out in this order. However, the tournament split the top five and bottom five for a second RR. As such, by default Virginia and GW (top RR) should battle for fourth, while Virginia Tech and Duke (bottom RR) go for sixth. From here, you compare the two games played. VT and Duke split their games, which leads to three schools of thought: 1. "Playoff game" takes priority (Duke is sixth) 2. Overall PPG is next (VT is sixth) 3. Aggregate score determines sixth (I don't know) The same logic applies to Virginia and GW. Now, no matter what is decided, I still congratulate Penn State on thoroughly beating the field into submission. Also, I'm pretty sure the teams ahead of us were legit better, considering we went a combined 2-5 against those six teams listed 1-6 above. In the next post, I will talk about a four-way tie where there was no playoff, since it also came up. This should be of particular interest to NAQT. Andy
